Dear friends in Jesus,

I thought that the New Year day would be a good occasion to share some thoughts with you as it brings new hope and enthusiasm to our lives. It is also a special occasion to me personally, as I begin my priestly ministry at Holy Family Parish at the dawn of the New Year.

As the members of one community formulated as the parish of Holy Family, it is an opportunity to renew and affirm our faith in the Lord Jesus and to confirm our trust in the protection of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph throughout our life-journey in the New Year.

The Malayalam translation of “parish”, IDAVAKA, is really meaningful and significant. Idavaka means idayante vaka, i.e. ‘owned by the shepherd’. We know that this Shepherd is none other than Jesus, who called himself the Good Shepherd who came to give His life to save His sheep. Jesus emphasizes that each one of us belongs to that herd of sheep owned by Him. Let us pledge that we will be a community worth its name and significance according to the mind of the Great Shepherd reminding ourselves that we are owned by Him. If so, we can imagine how united in love we must be to build up this community as Jesus’ own brothers and sisters.

We must untiringly pray that our young generation and children must be comforted and encouraged by our strong faith and vibrant tradition handed over to us through generations and especially by our own parents. They will love our church only if they know the uniqueness of the vitality of our Church. Let us be optimistic and hopeful that all our efforts and sacrifice for building up our parish, will not be futile, but certainly will bear fruit. What may be the achievements of our lives and their tensions in a foreign land, away from our dear ones, if we cannot build up the lives of the growing generation, grounded in strong faith and real convictions?

So, let us continue our efforts for the growth of our community to the next steps, as we have done through the years after its formation and steady growth, not forgetting, but standing in great reverence before the selfless sacrifice and inspiration of all the priests who have ministered to us and the leaders who stood in front and the whole community which walked with them.

Yes, we will stand together with Our Shepherd, praying that we may be strengthened by the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit who guides us in each step we take and all decisions we make.

Yours in Our Lord,

REV.Fr. Paul Kodakarakaran
